Meet James, The Tall Tutor

For James, math isn’t just a subject. It’s a way of looking at the world.

His passion for mathematics began when he was 13 years old, thanks to a teacher, Mr. Hickmet, who recognized James’s natural ability with numbers and, as James likes to put it, “forced” him to join the A-STEM Math Club. That push sparked an interest that has stayed with him ever since.

James went on to study physics at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), while continuing to explore mathematics at an advanced level. His experience includes calculus, differential equations, abstract algebra, and other college-level mathematics.

Today, James lives in North Las Vegas and brings that same enthusiasm for math to his tutoring. He enjoys helping students move beyond simply memorizing formulas to actually understanding why the math works. His goal is to make difficult concepts approachable, build students’ confidence, and help them develop the problem-solving skills to tackle increasingly challenging material.

James often says that he sees the world through a mathematical lens. Even his favorite equation reflects his appreciation for the beauty hidden inside mathematics:

e^(iπ) + 1 = 0

Known as Euler’s identity, the equation connects five of mathematics’ most fundamental constants in one remarkably simple expression.

Whether a student is struggling with algebra, preparing for calculus, or tackling college-level mathematics, James wants them to discover that with the right explanation and a little persistence, even intimidating math can start to make sense.
